Lubricants and Fluids for your Land Rover

Red Line Engiiine oil Treatment Land Rover special oils Red Line water Wetter

Modern Land Rovers use vehicle specific fluids, and it's important that you continue use the correct ones. Vintage Land Rovers also have requirements that are not met by modern products, and you have to be careful there too. BP has what your Land Rover or Range Rover needs to assure long life for your engine, transmission, differentials, radiator, and power steering/ACE systems.

Red Line MT-90 GL-4 oil

Red Line Synthetic 75W-90 GL-4 for differentials, transfer cases

Land Rover specifies synthetic 75W-90 in Discovery 2 and Range Rover 2: Red Line makes the best in the business. Use in both front and rear differentials and the transfer case in all Discoverys and Range Rovers from '87-'02.

Also great for Series Land Rover manual transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, and steering boxes. This formula protects the brass in the synchronizers, bushings, and thrust washers, and makes shifting smoother. Compatible with conventional oils. This is a very good product for your Series gearbox.  MT-90 is specially formulated to provide the perfect coefficient of friction for optimum synchronizer performance in manual transmissions. This results in smoother shifting at high or low temperatures

(Not for use in Defender or Discovery manual transmissions: use ATF Dextron III)

Sta-Lube GL-4 gear lube

Sta-Lube 75W-90

GL-4 gear oil

For Series Land Rover

Land Rover specifies GL-4 gear oils for Series Land Rovers.    GL-4 is important for protecting the brass and bronze pieces in the gearboxes.  Unfortunately  chain auto parts stores have switched over to carrying GL-5 gear oils and some independents will special order GL-4 for you as long a you buy a whole case of gallon containers.  GL-5 gear oil attacks the brass parts used in Series Land Rovers, shortening their service life.

Sta-Lube GL-4 has been the lube of choice for swivel balls, diffs, trannies, transfer cases, overdrives, steering boxes, and steering relays for decades.  This versatile lubricant contains anti-rust and anti-wear EP additives to provide corrosion protection in drives and hypoid gears.  All without harming the brass parts in your Land Rover.

Red Line Engine oil treatment

Red Line Engine Oil Treatment:

for 1987-2004: 3.5, 3.9, 4.2, 4.0, and 4.6 pushrod Rover V8 engines

Flat tappet engines require a zinc blend for friction reduction in their oil. This compound, known as ZDDP, has been an important part of engine oils for decades. But California requires that all emission parts be warranted for 100,000 miles, including catalytic converters. Sometimes that's tough for manufacturers to meet, especially if the engine using oil. The zinc can clog converters over high mileages. So, the manufacturers have persuaded the oil companies to eliminate ZDDP, which is being phased out nationwide.

Modern engines are designed for low internal friction so the zinc really isn't required anymore. But older engines still need it. The wear is first seen on cams and tappets, where friction and pressure is highest. We've seen freshly rebuilt engines destroy cams and lifters within a few thousand miles due to this oil formula change.

To protect your engine, add one bottle of Engine Oil Treatment to restore zinc levels to your conventional oil at each change. The product reduces friction, improving efficiency and mileage. It's also fortified with detergents, dispersants, and antioxidants to keep the engine clean. It does not alter the viscosity of the oil.

Rover V8's last practically forever when properly lubricated and cooled. We also recommend it for Series Land Rovers. Not for LR3, Range Rover 3, or Range Rover Sport.

Red Line water wetter

Red Line Water Wetter Coolant Supplement

Water Wetter improves the ability of water based coolant/antifreeze to transfer heat through the radiator. By breaking down the surface tension of water (the force that holds a drop of water together) the coolant can more efficiently transfer heat. The product also includes corrosion inhibitors, which is very important in aluminium engines. Out here in the desert we use this in all of our cars, and it really works! With a cooling system that's in good shape it can lower operating temps by 20 degrees. One bottle per system, it's concentrated.

Castrol GTLMA brake fluid

Castrol GT/LMA Brake Fluid

used on all models*

Land Rover specifies Castrol as their original equipment brake fluid. This is premium DOT 4 spec, perfect for ABS systems. "LMA" stands for low moisture activity, and keeping water out of the fluid is essential for system longevity. Land Rover also specifies replacing the brake fluid every 30,000 miles as routine maintenance. Brake system components are very expensive these days, and maintenance is neither difficult nor expensive by comparison. Castrol can be hard to find at your local auto part store, but we've got it in stock and ready to ship. This is the fluid the Series Land Rover manual specifies for Series Land Rover brake and clutch systems.  Also perfect for Land Rover Defenders and Discoverys.

12 oz. bottle GTLMA
32 oz. bottle GTLMA/L

* considering using silicone DOT 5 fluid? Brake component manufacturers like TRW/Lucas (original equipment on Land Rovers) consider their warranty void if you do, as will Land Rover. DOT4 works great, and systems will last forever if changed as directed.

Mitycac vacuum pump

Mityvac Brake System Tool

We like to evacuate the master cylinder reservoir at least once a year and replace the fluid with fresh. You'll be surprised on how discolored the fluid is sitting in the reservoir. We like to use the MityVac suction tool for this job. It makes it quick and easy to perform this simple but important maintenance task. It can also be used to pull old fluid through the bleed nipples on the calipers and wheel cylinders, and to evacuate air from the system.

Land Rover hub grease

Swivel Housing 'Grease'

For Range Rover Classic, Land Rover Discovery 1, Defender and all Series trucks,

The front swivel housings hold the u-joints or CV joints that allow your powered front axle to turn. The upper and lower steering pins and the joints themselves are kept lubed by 90wt gear oil. There is a drain and 'level' plug for keeping them topped up.

If the pins get worn, or the big ball seal wears out, the 90wt. will leak out, causing additional wear. On Range Rover Classics, Land Rover Defenders, and Discoverys this means CV joint failure, which can be very dangerous. The lube also keeps the wheel bearings in good shape. Many owners don't even realize that keeping the front hubs lubed is a standard maintenance issue.

You can't use fibrous chassis or wheel bearing grease either. Sure, it won't leak, but it won't splash and get up to where it needs to be.

Land Rover came up up with this product to reduce leaks on alloy wheels. It's kind of like a runny grease, not sticky like wheel bearing stuff. It's very easy to fill: simply open the level plug, clip off the tip of the packet, and squeeze it in. One tube does one hub. It stays in there and does a good job of keeping things lubed. Also works great in Series trucks in both the front hubs and the steering box.

Swivel housing grease works great in Series Land Rover steering boxes.  It provides proper lubrication and since it is thicker than gear oil it is much less likely to leak out between the adjustment shims.

Land Rover Discovery II power steering fluid

Discovery II Power Steering / ACE Fluid

The Land Rover Discovery II had an option for 'active cornering enhancement'. If your truck has this, the reservoir for your power steering will have two caps. If not, it will have one. It's very important to use the Land Rover fluid for both systems. You can not use generic power steering fluid from your auto parts store! You risk seal damage and system failure.
