Stage 7 , July 1

Arriving in West Des Moines Photo by Keith Armstrong
The weather was beautiful: clear, cool and
breezy. The crowds were great, and we even got free gas
from the folks at Cat Scales. The Land Rover continues
to run flawlessly: the sum total of maintenance to the
halfway point is adding a quart of oil after about 1500
miles of hard rally driving.
That's the good news.
We really went after it today: used every
trick we knew, nailed each maneuver. Really enjoyed a challenging
rally course and gave it all we had. Our score was over
a minute. We're going backwards!
Tonight we asked a few of the top teams
what was going on, because we sure can't see it. There
have been two suggestions: one is tires and one is procedural.
We're going to try both tomorrow and see if we can fix
it.
We lost several cars today to mechanical
failures. The kids that are leading lost an oil line (yes,
I know it sounds supicious, but we really don't think foul
play was at work) and are replacing their engine tonight.
The Paige Hillclimber developed a rod knock and they shut
it down; they are out of the race from being in 16th overall.
Old cars: anything can break at any time.
Gotta get some sleep, hopefully we'll have
better news tomorrow. How many times can we sign off with
that? It's still fun and we're really enjoying the sights
of the upper midwest. We'll be in Nebraska tomorrow.
